Instead of burning cash fighting OpenAI head-on, they leverage controversy for free publicity — rejecting the Ministry of Defense deal generated headlines no ad buy could match.
When they do spend, they're clever about it. Search "Mistral" on the App Store and you won't find Mistral — you'll find an ad for Anthropic. They're not poaching from the market leader; they're quietly vacuuming up the cheaper alternatives.
